CURATORIAL STATEMENT
From Debris to Dreams offered a powerful alternate presence for Ghana at the Venice Biennale, showcasing the work of multi-disciplinary artist Patrick Tagoe-Turkson. Rooted in his Winneba heritage, Tagoe-Turkson transforms discarded flip-flops collected from Ghana’s beaches into vibrant sculptural tapestries—turning environmental debris into symbols of resilience, renewal, and hope. His practice invites audiences to reimagine waste, possibility, and our relationship with the planet.
The exhibition also honoured renowned Ghanaian modernists Owusu Dartey and Prof. E. Tetteh, drawing a line between the country’s artistic past and its evolving contemporary voice. Presented by the El’Cou Collective and commissioned by the Konyo Museum of Ghanaian Art, the exhibition celebrated creativity, sustainability, and the transformative power of art. Hosted at the Dei Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art from April 10th to May 30th, 2024, it invited visitors to witness how discarded fragments can become visionary dreams of a brighter future.
